What is the Nantucket Conservation Commission?

The Nantucket Conservation Commission (NCC) plays an important role in safeguarding the island's resources. It reviews, conditions, permits, and inspects projects proposed within 100 feet of any protected resource area. Together, the state law, the local bylaw, and the recently updated Wetlands Protection Regulations provide strong protection for Nantucket's sensitive coastal and inland ecosystems.

More specifically, the Nantucket Conservation Commission is responsible for carrying out the requirements of the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act (310 CMR 10.00) along with Nantucket's local Wetlands Protection Bylaw and Regulations (chapters 136 and 390 of the Code of the Town of Nantucket).

The NCC consists of seven members appointed to the Select Board to serve three-year terms. The Commission is supported by the Conservation Agent, the Natural Resources Director, and other Natural Resources Department staff.

NCC Meetings, Agendas, and Minutes

Meetings are held twice a month on Thursdays at 5:00pm. A schedule of 2026 meeting dates and filing deadlines is available on the Meetings Schedule Page. Meetings are conducted in hybrid format, allowing participation either in person or online via Zoom. In-person meetings take place in the Public Safety Facility Community Room at 4 Fairgrounds Road. Zoom registration details and location information are included on each meeting agenda. Agendas are posted in advance of each meeting, and minutes are published after they are approved.
